COVID-19: WHO declares Coronavirus a Pandemic. What Criteria Was Met and Why Does it Matter to You?

2019 Coronavirus pandemic

A disease is endemic when it is usually present in a community at an observed baseline level. That disease becomes an epidemic when there is a sudden increase in the number of cases than normally expected. The World Health Organization yesterday declared the 2019 coronavirus a pandemic which means it has spread beyond its Wuhan origin in China to several countries or continents and has affected a large number of people most of whom do not have immunity to the disease. A pandemic therefore means that the global spread of the disease is uncontained.
